Wow. Just wow. I knew that autism is a BIG source of stress in a family, all the way from the precious child who has it to his/her siblings and the parents, as well as the whole extended family to some extent.
However, I was very surprised to learn about a 2009 study that suggests that the stress level of moms of kids in the autistic spectrum is comparable to that of a combat soldier!
This study was led by Dr. Marsha Mailick Seltzer of the University of Wisconsin at Madison. You can read about it here.
Yet another reason to hate autism, not just because of what it does to my son but also for what it does to my family…
I am sure that there are more studies that support this assertion, but holy cow, just holy cow…

TFB is available as an ebook (Kindle, Nook, as well as in iTunes). The price of the Kindle version was just reduced by Amazon… (:-)
The hardcover is available at Amazon and at the Oxford University Press’ website. There’s even a 20% discount code from OUP.
This is a popular science book, which I hope to be enjoyed by laypeople and biologists alike.
